Miyajima Island is located in south-eastern Hiroshima and is the home of Itsukushima Shrine, which is famous for its great torii gate standing in the sea. It is said that Itsukushima Shrine was built on the coast of Miyajima because the whole island is believed to be God's body, and the shrine was sanctified around the end of the 6th century. Most of the main buildings were built in the 12th century.
