Tour Detail

Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Okinawa.

Experience a wide range of what Japan has to offer in this self-guided 16 day tour that takes you all the way from the hustle and bustle of downtown Tokyo to the relaxed sub-tropical beaches of Okinawa. This is a great package for first time visitors to Japan who really want to make the most of their 16 day trip to Japan.

This tour starts in the iconic Tokyo, one of the world's largest and most advanced cities, whose central streets have been featured in countless films and TV shows. Next, you will be headed down to Kyoto, a city with a whopping 17(!) World Heritage sites, and many other amazing temples, shrines and castles beyond even these. After Kyoto, you would head down to Hiroshima, home of one of Japan's best views, the Itsukushima shrine. Following this, onward to Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu, a city renowned for its distinguished cuisine. From Fukuoka, you can take a day trip to the port city of Nagasaki, the only point of contact with the west for hundreds of years, or Kumamoto, known for having one of the largest and most beautiful castles in Japan. To top all this off, you will then fly off to Okinawa where you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the weather (although there is plenty to see here too!)

This tour is a city break, a journey of food tourism and a beach holiday all rolled into one, and is perfect for families, individuals and couples as there's something for everyone.

  8. Day 8

    Location
    Kyoto
    Hotel
Dormy inn Premium Kyoto Eki mae
    Meal
    Breakfast
On day 8, we have a couple of choices of day trip for you!

If you're left craving more temples, option one is the one for you! Head to Nara, another of Japan's old capitals renowned for its Giant Buddha as well as the hundreds of deer, which roam the site freely. Nara is only 45 minutes away and trains run every half an hour or so.

If you're eager to get back into a city, option two is the choice for you, which takes you to Osaka, west Japan's answer to Tokyo. Osaka is the main city in a region called Kansai, known in Japan as being a little less uptight and a little more wild than their Tokyo counterparts. Fantastic food, shopping and nightlife and the people are the real highlights of Osaka. Osaka is only 25 minutes away from Kyoto and trains run roughly every twenty minutes.

(There is a secret third option that takes you to Kobe, a charming city that is world renowned for its beef.)
  9. Day 9

    Location
    Hiroshima
    Hotel
    Iwaso
    Meal
    Breakfast & Dinner
Next up are Hiroshima and Miyajima.

Hiroshima is a city now synonymous with the tragedy that befell it, but has since been re-constructed with a large site built to commemorate what was lost.
Miyajima is just down from Hiroshima city and is known for the stunning Itsukushima shrine, a bright red gate that appears to float in the ocean.

    Our recommendation:
Head down to Miyajima in the morning and try and grab some great holiday snaps. For lunch, have some Okonomiyaki, Hiroshima's famous savoury egg and noodle pancake, topped with pork and just about anything else you desire!
In the afternoon, head to the Peace Memorial Museum for some reflection and left yourself be a little overwhelmed.

Experience staying in Ryokan on Miyajima island!
  10. Day 10

    Location
    Fukuoka
    Hotel
JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Chuo
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Further West, on to Fukuoka!

Fukuoka is known for its nightlife and local cuisine, including the numerous food stalls or 'Yatai' set along the river. Particularly famous in Fukuoka is Hakata ramen, a style of ramen noodles that have produced restaurants the world over, but nothing quite compares to the authenticity you'll find in Fukuoka.

Just over an hour and twenty minutes west of Hiroshima, trains run that way every half an hour.
  11. Day 11

    Location
    Fukuoka
    Hotel
JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Chuo
    Meal
    Breakfast
Another day, another decision! There are a couple of options for day trips again.

Option one takes you to Nagasaki, site of the Nagasaki Peace Park, the Dejima port where the Dutch traded Western goods with the Japanese for many years, and the iconic Gunkanjima or 'Battleship Island', a derelict island full of abandoned buildings that was made famous in James Bond's 'Skyfall'.

Option two takes you to Kumamoto, home of Kumamoto Castle, one of the grandest and most beautiful castles in Japan and home to the mascot 'Kumamon', whose face has become well known worldwide.

    e.g.
Depart Hakata at 10:15 – Arrive Nagasaki at 12:21
Depart Nagasaki at 17:52 – Arrive Hakata at 19:51

    OR

Depart Hakata at 10:45 – Arrive Kumamoto at 11:21
Depart Kumamoto at 17:31 – Arrive Hakata at 18:07
  12. Day 12

    Location
    Okinawa island
    Hotel
    Kafuu Resort Fuchaku
    Meal
    Breakfast
Are you ready for your beach holiday? After all that travel, I can imagine that you are!

Okinawa is Japan's very own tropical paradise, with numerous lovely beaches and its own very different culture and cuisine, in part due to years of mixed influence from China, Korea and Japan.

Fly from Fukuoka to Naha by Japan Airlines or All Nippon Airlines.
Make your own way to Fukuoka Airport and leave Fukuoka at 10:00, to arrive in Naha at 11:40AM.
  13. Day 13

    Location
    Okinawa island
    Hotel
    Kafuu Resort Fuchaku
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Free to explore Okinawa.

    Our recommendation:
In your first full day in Naha, if you're not busy relaxing, why not check out Shuri castle, which offers a wonderful contrast to the other castles you have seen so far with its bright colours and obvious Chinese influence. In the evening take a wander down the 'Kokusaidori' literally international street and try some of the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Okinawa! Goya Champuru is a love-it-or-hate-it dish from Okinawa that is sure to be unlike anything else you've ever tasted!
  14. Day 14

    Location
    Okinawa island
    Hotel
    Kafuu Resort Fuchaku
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Free to explore Okinawa.

Again, you're welcome to just kick back and relax, but if you're interested in something else...

    Our recommendation:
Take a (slightly lengthy two hour) bus ride to visit one of the world's premier aquariums and the second largest in the world. Its main tank contains not one but THREE whale sharks and the surrounding Expo Park has plenty to do for the whole day. (This writer thinks its definitely worthwhile!)
  15. Day 15

    Location
    Okinawa island > London
    Meal
    Breakfast
Its time to leave paradise, I'm sorry! We hope you have enjoyed your trip around Japan, by now you will be an expert in Japanese food, culture and cuisine. But there is always more to see and do, so its well worth coming back and seeing what else Japan has to offer!

Leave Naha in the morning, bound for Tokyo by Japan Airlines or All Nippon Airlines.
Leave Naha at 11:30, arrive in Haneda at 13:45.

In the evening, return from Tokyo back to London Heathrow.
  16. Day 16

    Location
    London
    Meal
    In Flight
Arrive back in London Heathrow. See you again, next time!
