The festival has a history of 300 years or so, also known as "the Gion Festival for the sea". Pilgrims gather to pray for the safety of sailors and a big catch for fishermen. It is held every year and ‘Tai-sai’ (a bigger celebration) is held in a year that has had a bumper catch. In ‘Tai-sai’, there are beautiful barges, on which Kabuki and other plays are performed.
