Asakusa is located along the west bank of Sumida River and is the centre of Tokyo’s ‘Shitamachi’ culture. Shitamachi, literally means ‘lower town’ and was originally a working class area during the Edo period. Small, family run business operated out of tiny workshops throughout the district. It still has the atmosphere of a bustling, busy quarter and is evocative of times past.
The Sanja Matsuri held on the third Saturday and Sunday every May is known as one of the major festivals of Edo.
Founded in 628, Sensoji is the oldest and most popular Buddhist temples in Tokyo and is one of the major tourist attractions in Tokyo. The huge lanterns hanging from Kaminarimon Gate are the landmark of Asakusa and are very famous throughout Japan.
Tokyo Sky Tree is a new broadcasting tower which stands 634m tall and opened in 2012, becoming a new symbol of Tokyo. The area around the tower is complete with shopping and entertainment facilities called the Tokyo Sky Tree Town. A commercial facility around 300 shops, restaurants and offices are built at the foot of the tower along with an aquarium and a planetarium. The tower offers two Tembo (observation) decks at the heights of 350m and 450m respectively and enjoys a panoramic view across the entire Kanto region.
Hoppy Street also known as ‘Nikomi (stew) street’ is located on the west side of Sensoji temple in Asakusa. It’s only 80m long lined on both sides by old fashioned small bars crowded with regulars and tourists. The charm of this street is the relaxed lively Shitamachi atmosphere. Hoppy is a low alcohol (0.8%) beer normally mixed with Japanese Shochu liquor. We recommend to try Hoppy with Nikomi (stew with offal and vegetables) dishes.
