The Fukushima prefecture is the third largest land in Japan. It is situated in the southern part of the Tohoku region, about 200 kilometres from Tokyo. After the Tohoku earthquakes in 2011, specific areas around the Fukushima nuclear plant remain evacuated, though most of Fukushima has been restored to its former state. The Japanese authorities are carrying out comprehensive checks to monitor radiation in the surrounding area. The popular tourist sites including Ouchi-juku and Aizu area are located in the western part of Fukushima and considered to be safe to visit for tourists.
