Shichimi is mix of traditional Japanese spices, red chilli pepper, Japanese pepper, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seeds, dried citrus peel and green dried seaweed. Created in 17th century during the Edo period, it goes well with Soba (buckwheat) noodles and can be added to any dish.
Kyo Shichimi is known for its traditional methods in preserving food, by paying more attention to the taste than the spiciness.
Each maker has its original method of mixing and people in Kyoto have their own favorite purveyor.
