This is a natural land bridge with 8,000 Japanese pine trees along its coast. The location is called Miyazu Bay, on the north coast of Kyoto prefecture and is known as one of the three most scenic places in Japan.
The literal translation of ‘Amanohashidate’ is ‘a bridge to heaven’ as it looks as if it leads to the sky when viewed from either end.
It has been moulded into this particular shape by mysterious natural forces over thousands of years.
Visitors can walk or cycle across the land bridge or take a ferry. Its beautiful sandy beaches are a lovely place to swim and can be found towards the northern side of the isthmus.
