Entsuin is a Zen Buddhist temple situated next to Zuiganji temple in Matsushima, which makes it convenient to visit both of them on a trip to see the beautiful Matsushima Bay. It was built in 1646 as a mausoleum for Date Mitsumune, a grandson of the first lord of the Sendai Domain. Inside the mausoleum there are some Western-style images, unusual for Japanese temples but included due to the Date clan’s interest in Christianity and Western technology. The temple has four beautiful gardens including a rock garden and a rose garden. Between October and November the gardens are lit up so that visitors can enjoy the autumn leaves in the evening.
