Usuki is a former castle town and a Samurai district famous for its Usuki Sekibutsu (Stone Buddha). The ruins of Usuki Castle are located in the centre of Usuki City, about 8 minutes on foot from Usuki station. It is highly recommended to take a stroll along the stone-paved Nioza historical road – a 13 minute walk away from the ruins.
A free bicycle rental service is available at JR Usuki station or at the Tourist Information Centre for a small charge.
It is said that the Stone Buddha statues were carved out of cliff rocks around the 12th century. There are over 60 statues and 59 of them were designated as national treasures in 1995. Each statue has its own unique visage. The site is surrounded by bamboo trees accounting for a very peaceful atmosphere.
With its stone-paved streets lined with white walls, old samurai residences and temples, this old castle town offers the Edo period atmosphere.
Every year on the first weekend in November a beautiful bamboo lantern festival is held here to welcome the soul of Princess ‘Hannya-hime’.
