Kurokawa Onsen is one of the most charming small hot spring towns/villages located in the north-west part of the Kumamoto prefecture between the Kuju Mountain Range and Mount Aso.
There are no high-rise hotels or neon advertisements in this area. The town is preserved under a project to maintain its nostalgic atmosphere.
The Kurokawa onsen is popular for "Nyuto Tegata" (Onsen-Hopping Pass) which is sold for JPY1300 and is valid for six months. The price includes three visits to an open air bath in one of the 24 ryokans.
Another way to enjoy Kurokawa is to go hiking in the surrounding area. An English audio guide can be hired at the village visitor centre for JPY 500. It is where you can obtain information about various ryokans and places of interest on the hiking trail.
