During the Edo period, the people of Sasayama created a Bon-Odori (a style of Japanese dance) festival to add colour to their summer.
The festival is now well known as a Japanese folk music event throughout the country. Thousands of people come out and dance to ‘Dekansho-bushi (rhythms)’. The songs were created by local people a long time ago but the meaning of the lyrics have been lost to time.
