It is said the original Tsuruga castle known as the Impregnable Castle was built around 600 years ago. During the Boshin War in 1868, enemy forces are believed to have struggled tremendously as Aizu forces withstood waves of attacks.
The five-storey castle tower that stands today was reconstructed in 1965 using methods and techniques from the Edo period.
