Shuri Castle (Shuri-jo) is located on a small hill overlooking Naha city. Shuri was the former capital of Ryukyu Kingdom, and the castle served as the administrative headquarters and residence of the King and the royal family for several centuries until the Ryukyu Kingdom became the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa in 1879. The original Shurijo Castle was destroyed during the Second World War, and the building in its present state is a reconstruction. In 1992, the area was opened to the public as the Shurijo Castle Park to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Okinawa mainland return.
