For many, the name Nagasaki is synonymous with the second atomic bomb, which struck this city and caused widespread devastation in 1945. To commemorate this, Nagasaki has a prominent Peace Park with a single pillar at its centre to mark the epicentre of the bombing, as well as the above Peace Statue, which symbolises the Nagasaki citizens' wish for peace. The statue’s right hand points to the sky to signify the threat of atomic weapons while its left arm is raised horizontally to represent the wish for peace. The figure's eyes are lightly closed in prayer for the souls of the victims of the atomic bomb attack.
