Naoshima is a small island on the Seto Inland Sea known for its modern art, architecture and sculptures. The island features a large number of interesting contemporary art museums designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando and includes Benesse House, a museum and resort hotel in one, the underground Chichu Museum and Lee U-Fan museum.
Many works of art are displayed in open-air settings and the most popular piece is a “pumpkin” by Yayoi Kusama overlooking the Seto Inland Sea.
The Art House Project is a project whereby vacant traditional Japanese houses in the Honmura district are assigned to artists who turn the spaces into works of art. Currently there are seven open projects including ‘Minamidera’ – a new structure by Tadao Ando accounting for the size of artwork by James Turrell ‘Backside of the Moon’ inside.
