Takeda Castle Ruins (Asago city)

These castle ruins are also called ‘Castle in the sky’ or the ‘Japanese Machu Picchu’ from its’ unique location, it being on top of a mountain.

The breath-taking view of a white sea of clouds wrapped around the ruins is an absolute must-see, especially in autumn or winter.

The castle was built in 1443 by a local feudal lord and fell to the enemy, Hideyoshi Toyotomi under the orders of Nobunaga Oda in 1580. The site has been designated as a National Historical site and the groundwork of the castle was reconstructed in 1980.

Access to the castle ruins involves some hiking, owing to its position. There are several viewing platforms in Ritsuunkyo Valley Park which are located in the other side from the JR Takeda station from where you can also enjoy a view of the Takeda castle ruins.
