This event based on traditional Japanese folklore Namahage and is held on 31st December. It has its origins in the ancient city of Oga. Namahage is performed by local young men in demon masks wearing traditional garments made from straw. They storm into people’s homes in search of lazy children or new community members in order to fight and exorcise evil forces. It has become a New Year’s Eve tradition in Akita.
