When is the best time of year to book a flight to Japan?

Air fare prices vary greatly and can be from as low as £550 if you catch a good deal during off-peak times. There are pros and cons to any season, however, Japan’s long north-to-south extension means there’s always so much to see and do no matter when you decide to travel!

Off-peak - cheap and cheerful!

Flying in-direct, during off-peak season gives you the best chance of getting cheap flights to Japan. Off-peak is considered to be late-May until the summer holiday period / September (however, be aware of Typhoon season) / early December / late January until early-March. We advise that if you are paying less than £650 then you have got yourself a cheap flight to Japan. Airlines often run promotions and we recommend you check our website for the latest offers.

Peak – unique and beautiful nature!

Peak season Spring (March-early May) and autumn (mid-September-November) are considered the best times to visit Japan. Spring sees the entire country showered in beautiful, soft pink cherry blossom petals and from October to late November Japan’s stunning autumn colours can be seen all over.

Below are the annual Japanese national holidays we advise you avoid: Accommodation availability will be lower than usual and flight prices may increase during these periods. The times to avoid:

Golden Week (April 29th to May 5th)
Obon holidays (around August 13th to 16th)
Around New Years. Many shops and attractions are also closed, so check these beforehand.

For the best chance of finding a good deal, we recommend you begin searching for flights as soon as possible and aim to book at least 4 months in advance. If you plan to visit during peak season, start searching even earlier as flights will be significantly more expensive. If your dates of travel are flexible, we recommend you compare your available dates to find the cheapest option. Direct flights take around 12 hours in total from London to Tokyo. In-direct flight times can vary but usually take about 5 hours longer including transfer time.
