Mt Hagoro (Haguro-san) is one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa along with Mt Gassan and Mt Yudono. They are a well-known venue for Shugendo training in the mountains. The Dewa Sanzan Shrine on Mt Haguro was built to venerate the gods of all the three mountains and is a popular tourist spot. The mountain path is lined with 500-year-old Japanese cedar trees and the journey to the top via the 2,446 stone steps takes approximately one hour.
