Naruko Gorge stretches along the Otani River and is 2.5 km long and 100 meters deep. Located in the north-west of Miyagi Prefecture, it is one of the region's most scenic gorges. It is also known as one of the best koyo (autumn leaves) viewing spots in the area. The best time for viewing colourful leaves is from mid-October to early November. Unfortunately, at present the main walking trail is closed until 2017, however there is an alternative option which takes approximately one hour. At the end of the gorge there is a museum dedicated to Kokeshi Dolls, handmade wooden dolls usual with a floral pattern. Naruko Town is also famous for hot springs. There are five resorts in the region making up around 400 springs.
