Kakunodate is a former castle town located in the eastern part of Akita prefecture. The town is called "small Kyoto of the Michinoku" and is famous for its historical samurai residences and thousands of beautiful cherry blossom trees. A cherry blossom festival is held here between 20th April and 5th May every year.
