The wisteria is a very important flower in Japan and is in fact only native to Japan, China and the eastern USA. It has a long history in Japanese culture, being linked to painting, theatre, names and family crests. Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi is famous for its large collection Japanese wisteria flowers and is a popular destination when they are in bloom. Generally, they flower from late April to mid-May as well as the many other flowers growing in the park. One of the popular displays is an 80m long wisteria tunnels which visitor can actually walk through.
In recent years, the park has also become very popular because of its winter illuminations, whereby LED lights among others are used to decorate the entire park, with light shows set to music and large displays where the lights themselves are made to resemble wisteria. It is very beautiful and perfect for a romantic evening.
