For travellers heading to Nagano, one of the main attractions is the Jigokudani Yaen Koen, also known as Snow Monkey Park, located in the valley of the Yokoyu River. This park is famous for the unique experience of seeing wild monkeys, the Japanese Macaques that are native to the region, bathing in natural hot spring waters, especially in the winter months. While the pool is manmade, this is directly in the middle of the monkey’s habitat, and no-one needed to convince them to start bathing there! The monkeys are great fun to watch and are very used to humans being around, mostly just ignoring them in their entirety. The best time for a photo opportunity is in the winter, especially when the area is covered in snow. The snow monkey park is very close to the onsen (hot spring) towns of Shiba and Yudanaka, so why not stay a night in the area and enjoy some hot springs yourself before taking a trip to see these now famous monkeys?
