Along with Miyajima in Hiroshima and Amano Hashidate in Kyoto, Matsushima has one of the three most famous scenic views in Japan. The bay is dotted with around 200 small islands covered by pine trees. The best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of this area is a 50-minute cruise, where you will see roughly 100 of the islands in a 25-30 minute period. Panoramic views and the changing appearance in any given season make this an attractive place to visit year round.
Matsushima is also known for Zuiganji temple, a very important Zen temple in the northeast of Japan. It is well known for its beautiful painted and gilded sliding doors.
Matsushima is very easy to get to from Sendai, and all its sights are very close together making it an easy place to visit.
