Takachiho is located in the north west of the Miyazaki region and the town is sandwiched between the Oita and Kumamoto regions.
Takachiho is associated with myths and legends of the nation’s origin. There are a number of interesting and unmissable sightseeing spots connected to the myths.
At the Takachiho Shrine every evening, for a small fee of JPY 700, you can enjoy the ‘Kagura Dance’, a short version of ‘Yokagura.’
Every night from mid-November to early February you can watch the traditional ‘Yokagura’ - sacred dance rituals. The dancers reenact legends and their moves comprise of 33 different patterns. The ritual has been handed down amongst the locals from generation to generation.
Takachiho is known as a ‘Power Spot’ a place believed to give visitors spiritual energy, heal their ailments or simply recharge their batteries. Along with the Amanoiwato Shrine and Amano Yasugawara, one of the best spots for spiritual experience is Takachiho Gorge.
It was created by the erosion of lava from Mount Aso. You can rent a boat to row along the gorge and immerse yourself in its breath-taking natural scenery. There are also several pedestrian routes to enjoy the gorge. Boat rental service is available between 7:30 – 18:00 hrs. Cost: JPY 2000 per 30 mins for a maximum of 3 occupants. It is especially popular in the early hours at weekends and national holidays.
Built near Amano Yasugawara, the cave is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu who is believed to have hidden after battle with her brother.
It is located just a short walk from the Amanoiwato Shrine and believed to be a place where 8 million gods gathered to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu from her hideaway and bring back the sunlight. Along the river, you will see piles of stones which are said to bring good luck when stacked in a neat and orderly pile.
