On this 3 day driving tour, you will set of for a short trip around the island of Kyushu, starting in Fukuoka but the main part of this trip is not to stay in a city but to get out into the country! From Fukuoka you will head to the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita prefecture. Many Buddhist temple lie dotted around this peninsula and often they are much older and more unique than those seen on the main island of Japan.
The highlight of the tour is staying in a Shukubo or 'temple lodging' where you will be given the opportunity to experience the simple, traditional lifestyle of Buddhist monks.
Pick up your rent a car at Nippon Rent a car Office near Hakata station in Fukuoka around 9AM and travel to Kunisaki Peninsula.
Buddhism has been a part of Japanese culture since the 6th century, and Monjusenji was believed to have been founded a century later. The surrounding scenery is simply amazing and the temple itself is rustic but beautiful and authentic. Make the most of exploring the grounds. This is your lodging for the night! At this temple, you will be given the opportunity to practice zen, to eat like a monk,
Your zen experience starts from 3PM. Join in, and get a glimpse of why this religion has been prominent in Japan for so many years.
Moring program starts at 5:30AM
Breakfast will be served at 7:30AM
Something of an early start, but hopefully all the zen will have left you feeling refreshed and clear headed!
You are free to do as you please for the rest of the day.
Leave your shukubo lodging around 9AM then visit Futago-ji, a 1300 year old temple in the heart of the Kunisaki peninsula the grounds of which extend around the surrounding mountain and forest areas. This area is known for preserving a unique Buddhist culture that contains elements of Shinto, Buddhism and mountain worship. As to be expected, this area has fantastic hiking.
Your journey into the spiritual past of Japan is soon coming to an end... but there's no need to hurry back to Fukuoka right away! The car doesn't need to be back until 7PM, so head out and explore the rest of this area, if you wish.
Alternatively, on your way back to Fukuoka you could stop off at Beppu, one of the major onsen or 'hot spring' towns in Japan. There are plenty of public baths suiting someone that wants something a little swanky, at Tanayu for example, or something very traditional, like Hoyoland.
Either way, don't forget you need to return your car to Fukuoka by 7PM!
