Tour Detail

Tokyo, Gifu and Ishikawa and Osaka. On this 11 day self-guided tour around Japan you will have the opportunity to experience two sides of Japan, the old and the new as you progress from the neon lights of Tokyo to the old Post Town of Magome, which used to serve travellers walking between Tokyo and Kyoto, which you can try out a portion of, too! From there, you will progress to Takayama, a city with a well-preserved old town. From here you will visit Shirakawa-go, a very special UNESCO World Heritage Site. After, this you will head to the wonderful city of Kanazawa, well known for its beautiful gardens, before capping off your adventure Yamanaka Onsen, which has a lovely hiking trail along the river, after which you can kick back, relax and enjoy a long soak in a Japanese hot spring bath.

Itinerary - 11 Days

  1. Day 1

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku
Take off in the UK, arrive in Tokyo - Narita/Haneda International Airport.
After you arrive, transfer to your hotel via Limousine Bus and take some time to get adjusted - or dive right in!

    Our suggestion:
Why not head to Shibuya crossing and try out some Japanese food (and if you're feeling really adventurous some karaoke)?
  2. Day 2

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Free time in Tokyo.

With your first full day in Japan, Tokyo is your oyster!

    Our suggestion:
Check out the old and the new in Asakusa, with Sensoji, a 7th century Buddhist temple, hugely popular at new year and then look up at the Sky Tree, Japan's tallest structure. (You're welcome to go up it and look down at everything else, as well!)
  3. Day 3

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku
    Meal
    Breakfast & Lunch
Join a one-day tour to Mt Fuji & Hakone. Mt. Fuji, or 'Fuji-san' as it is respectfully called in japan, is a real spiritual homeland and a truly awe-inspiring sight. Enjoy panoramic views across Lake Ashi and get the perfect photo to really make your friends jealous!
  4. Day 4

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Free time in Tokyo!

    Our suggestion:
After all that nature, maybe it's time to check-out Japan's futuristic side. Head to Odaiba and see Asimo the robot in action at the 'Miraikan' the Museum of Future Technology. Shop until evening and enjoy the view of the Rainbow bridge and the rest of Tokyo from a distance.
  5. Day 5

    Location
    Magome
    Meal
    Breakfast & Dinner
From Tokyo, it's time to head to Magome, the Old Post town.

From Magome, you can enjoy a beautiful hiking trail to the nearby town of Tsumago, an even more immaculately preserved post-town. These two towns are part of a longer trail that stretched between Tokyo and Kyoto (way before the days where bullet trains could do this route in a couple of hours!) and so travellers often stopped in these places. In keeping with this theme, your stay tonight will be in a ryokan in the grounds of a temple.

    Suggested route:
Travel to Nakatsugawa via Nagoya by Shinkansen Hikari and JR limited express train Hida.
(This takes three hours and trains depart every hour)
From there take a local bus to Magome (30 minutes).

    (Accommodation: Manpukuan *Eishoji temple)
  6. Day 6

    Location
    Takayama
    Meal
    Breakfast
Today you are off to Takayama, a city with a well-preserved Old Town.

    Our suggestion:
Go on a trip to the past in the Old Town and Hida Folk Village, an open air museum full of traditional houses built in the 17th to 19th centuries.

    Suggested route:
    Nakatsugawa 10:20 > Takayama 14:08.
(It's quite a long way and trains aren't so frequent, so please plan your route a little in advance!)
  7. Day 7

    Location
    Kanazawa
    Hotel
    Dormy inn Kanazawa
    Meal
    Breakfast
Today you're heading to Kanazawa, but along the way you will be stopping off at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go.

What makes Shirakawa-go so special is the traditional thatched roof farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old and take their unique shape as a result of being designed to withstand considerable snowfall.

In the past, Kanazawa was host to the Maeda Clan, one of the most powerful clans in Japan. These days it is best known for Kenrokuen, said to be one of the three great gardens of Japan.

    Suggested route:
    Takayama 10:50 > Shirakawago 11:40
    Shirakawago 15:20 > Kanazawa 16:45
  8. Day 8

    Location
    Kanazawa
    Hotel
    Dormy inn Kanazawa
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Free to explore Kanazawa

Kanazawa is a modern place, too! Check out the 21st Century Museum, a truly amazing collection of contemporary art.
In the afternoon, why not book a tour of the Ninjadera, the 'Ninja Temple'? The Maeda clan created this temple as a secret lookout, full of traps and tricks right out of a movie, disguised as a normal Buddhist temple.
  9. Day 9

    Location
    Yamanaka onsen
    Hotel
    Kuriya Yasohachi
    Meal
    Breakfast & Dinner
Your trip is almost at an end, but not before you've had time to relax properly!

Next, you are headed to Yamanaka Onsen, a hot spring resort town said to have been discovered 1300 years ago. Why not relax and enjoy an essential part of Japanese culture, bathing? Its very relaxing and a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

If you aren't weary enough for that just yet, have a short hike along the river first! This is a very beautiful route and highly recommended by our Japanese staff.

    Suggested route:
    e.g. Kanazawa 13:48 > Kaga Onsen 14:13
  10. Day 10

    Location
    Osaka
    Hotel
    Dormy inn Premium Namba
    Meal
    Breakfast
Back to the Future! Osaka may seem a bit like Tokyo-- on the surface. Osaka is the main city in a region called Kansai, known in Japan as being a little less uptight and a little more wild than their Tokyo counterparts. Fantastic food, shopping and nightlife and the people are the real highlights of Osaka.

    Suggested route:
    e.g. Kaga Onsen 13:21 > Shin-Osaka 13:32
  11. Day 11

    Meal
    Breakfast
So there you have it. The future, the past and then the future again. Japan is a completely different place from one region to another, each part with its own unique culture and varied history. We hope you have enjoyed this trip, and hope you visit Japan again, as there is always more to see.

To get home, please make your way to Osaka International Airport by Haruka Express train and then catch your flight home. We'll see you next time!
