Are you a newcomer to Japan wanting the must-sees but are a little short on time? This 7 day Japan itinerary self-guided holiday, travelling with a Japan Rail Pass is your perfect choice. Your holiday starts with a three-night stay in Japan’s bustling capital Tokyo, where you can explore this super modern high-tech city and, by way of contrast, also have a three-night stay in the old capital city of Kyoto to experience traditional culture and visit historical sites. It's called the Golden Route for a reason, why mess with success! This tour takes you around all the most famous sites but may leave you wanting more!

Itinerary - 7 Days

  1. Day 1

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo
Take off in the UK, arrive in Tokyo - Narita/Haneda International Airport. Use your JR Pass to transfer to Tokyo city using the Narita Express.
After you arrive, make your own way to the hotel and take some time to get adjusted - or dive right in!

    Our suggestion:
Why not head to Shibuya crossing and try out some Japanese food (and if you're feeling really adventurous some karaoke)?
  2. Day 2

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo
    Meal
    Breakfast
With your first full day in Japan, Tokyo is your oyster!

    Our suggestion:
Check out the old and the new in Asakusa, with Sensoji, a 7th century Buddhist temple, hugely popular at new year and then look up at the Sky Tree, Japan's tallest structure. (You're welcome to go up it and look down at everything else, as well!)
  3. Day 3

    Location
    Tokyo
    Hotel
    Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Decisions, decisions!
There are two options for Day 3, both of which can use your JR Pass.

The first takes you to Nikko, known as a centre of both Shinto and Buddhism, magnificent temples and shrines sit side-by-side in this amazing home of Japanese spirituality. The mausoleum here to one of Japan's most famous Shogun's is one of a kind, and truly astounding.

The second option takes you to Hakone, the best place for views of Mt. Fuji from across Lake Ashi. You can also take ferry rides or cable cars to get an even better view! (Please be aware, the JR Pass only takes you as far as Odawara station, from there you will need the Hakone Free Pass which costs around £30 and gives you unlimited access to the transport around Hakone, including the ferries and cable cars.)

Culture or nature is the name of the game, hope you can choose!
  4. Day 4

    Location
    Kyoto
    Hotel
    Hotel Granvia Kyoto
    Meal
    Breakfast
Travel to Kyoto with your JR Pass.

I hope you're ready for some temples!
What Tokyo is to skyscrapers, Kyoto is to temples. They're everywhere and many of them are spectacular. Particular highlights include Kinkakuji, Kiyomizu-dera, and Roan-ji.
  5. Day 5

    Location
    Kyoto
    Hotel
    Hotel Granvia Kyoto
    Meal
    Breakfast & Lunch
Enjoy a full day sightseeing tour of Kyoto and Nara, another old capital renowned for its giant Buddha and deer that roam free throughout the city.
  6. Day 6

    Location
    Kyoto
    Hotel
    Hotel Granvia Kyoto
    Meal
    Breakfast
    Another day another choice!

Hiroshima is the home of the Peace Museum, a sombre but moving and important site. Additionally, it is home of the Itsukushima Shrine, a beautiful red gate that emerges directly out of the ocean.

Himeji is the home of the stunning Himeji Castle also known as the 'White Herron Castle', widely regarded as the premier example of traditional Japanese castle architecture. It is both a national treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The view from the top is spectacular, and it is a very popular tourist spot in cherry blossom season.
  7. Meal
    Breakfast
I'm afraid your Golden Route has come to an end. After you check out of your hotel, please make your own way to the airport. I'm sure Japan will be sad to see you go. Perhaps this has whet your appetite for more of what Japan might have to offer and there is always plenty more to do!
