Tour Detail

Fukuoka, Kurokawa, Kumamoto and Takachiho.

Kyushu, despite being a developed and metropolitan island is home to many amazing natural sites from beautiful gorges to 'onsen' (Japanese hot spring baths) to volcanoes. As such, Kyushu is sometimes best explored by bus -- to really get into a part of the country that even the mighty bullet trains can't yet get to. With the handy SUNQ pass, all your transit around Kyushu for this adventure will be covered and you will be free to explore some of Kyushu's real wonders. Starting in Fukuoka (where there is fantastic food!) you will move to a lovely ryokan in Kurokawa, a town famous for onsen and its idyllic setting. From there you will see Mt. Aso, a fascinating active volcano the crater of which you can visit. Next, you will visit Kumamoto, a city famous for its magnificent castle before moving onto the magnificent Takachiho gorge, hiding place of the gods. Your trip will then return to Fukuoka, where you will be free to continue your holiday as you choose, (although an extension plan is available!) We hope you have a fantastic time taking this road less travelled.

Welcome to the lovely Kyushu, Japan's third largest island! (Arrive by plane to Fukuoka airport or by train to JR Hakata station.)

Check in to your hotel, and then you are free to explore Fukuoka!

Fukuoka is known for its nightlife and local cuisine, including the numerous food stalls or 'Yatai' set along the river. Particularly famous in Fukuoka is Hakata ramen, a style of ramen noodles that have led to the creation of restaurants the world over, but nothing quite compares to the authenticity you'll find in Fukuoka.
  2. Day 2

    Location
    Kurokawa
    Hotel
    Sanga
    Meal
    Breakfast & Dinner
Enjoy some breakfast, and then make your own way to Hakata Bus Centre and travel to Kurokawa Onsen by bus, using your SUNQ Pass.

Your ryokan for the night has some beautiful hot springs of its own for you to bathe in. However, if you want to wander around and try several different onsen, we recommend Kurokawa's onsen hopping pass, the 'Nyuto Tegata' which lets you visit three hot springs for only 1300yen (roughly £10).

    Suggested route:
Depart from Hakata at 09:01, Arrive in Kurokawa at 12:04.

Enjoy your stay, we think you will love this place!

Aso is a complex volcanic area consisting of several peaks and craters. The crater can be visited via cable car. It's a one-of-a-kind and mesmerising experience. The scenery in this area is also stunning,

Today you will go on a day trip to the Takachiho area, where there is a beautiful gorge, a true meeting place between nature and spirituality. It is famous in Japanese mythology as the place where Amaterasu, the sun goddess, came to hide. If you're feeling particularly adventurous you can row down this river, the waters of which are very tranquil. Takachiho is known as a ‘Power Spot’, a place believed to give visitors spiritual energy, healing or a simply a re-charge. The best spots for a spiritual experience are Takachiho Gorge, the Amanoiwato Shrine and Amano Yasu Gawara, the cave where Amaterasu hid.

Kumamoto is also home to the popular mascot, 'Kumamon', whose face has become well known worldwide. The castle was infamously sieged in 1877 during the Satsuma Rebellion, a war which took place over disagreement around Japan's modernisation.
